THE DOORBELL EDIT
“We’re on our way.” Lovely. The laundry is also on its way… across the sofa.
Give people somewhere to sit, a usable bathroom and a drink. The rest is a bonus. Choose your time window below and start at the top. These are priorities, not stopwatch promises.
How long until the knock?
Tap a plan to open it. You only need one.
5 minutes · The doorbell sprint
Your finish line: a clear way in, a seat and the bathroom basics.
- Clear the route. Move shoes and bags out of the path from the door to the seating and bathroom.
- Reclaim enough seats. Gather stray things in one basket or bag and put it out of the way. You can sort it after the visit.
- Check the bathroom. Toilet paper, hand soap and a clean towel. Give the sink a quick wipe if it needs one.
- Put out glasses. Water is a perfectly good welcome drink.
Skip: bed-making, cushion choreography and the cupboard nobody is opening.
10 minutes · Room to relax
Your finish line: the basics, plus somewhere to put a cup.
- Make a clear route and clear the seats. One temporary basket beats five half-finished tidying jobs.
- Reset the bathroom essentials. Check toilet paper, soap and a clean hand towel; wipe the sink if needed.
- Clear one useful surface. Make space on a coffee table, side table or counter for drinks. Take used mugs and plates to the kitchen.
- Set up the easy drink. Put glasses beside water or whichever drinks you already have. No shop run.
- Choose one small comfort. A reading lamp, a favorite playlist at conversation volume or a throw within reach. One is plenty.
Skip: sorting the mail. That is a different evening.
20 minutes · The unhurried welcome
Your finish line: a comfortable shared space, with a moment left for you.
- Do the arrival route first. Clear the path, enough seats and a place for coats or bags.
- Give the bathroom its turn. Check the toilet, sink, toilet paper, soap and hand towel. Deal with what actually needs attention.
- Finish one shared zone. Clear the coffee table, gather stray belongings and straighten the seating. Leave the rest of the house alone.
- Make the kitchen usable. Gather dishes together and clear a patch of counter for pouring drinks. A full kitchen reset can wait.
- Set out what you have. Glasses, drinks and, if you like, an easy snack already in the cupboard. No elaborate platter required.
- Give yourself the last moment. Wash your hands, pour some water and choose where you want to sit.
Skip: starting any job that involves the words “while I’m at it”.
The doorbell rang. Stop here.
Leave the last cushion where it is. You’re hosting people, not an inspection. Open the door.
For another day, when nobody is on the way
