A holiday gift exchange needs a clear ending as much as a fun beginning. This version uses one wrapped gift per player, two possible steals per gift, and no surprise final round. You can explain it before the first package opens, then keep the rule sheet where everyone can see it.
This is one adaptable house-rule version, not an official rulebook for every gift-swap game. Decide whether it suits your group before you send the invitation. The printable kit includes the rules, a copy-and-adapt invitation, a turn and gift record, and a host checklist.
Agree on the spending limit first
Ask who actually wants to play, then agree on a spending limit before anyone buys a gift. Spending less is welcome. A guest can enjoy the gathering without joining the swap, bringing a gift, or explaining their choice.
Choose gift guidelines at the same time. Are handmade gifts welcome? Can people bring a secondhand find in good condition? Is there a theme? A few clear answers are more useful than asking everyone to guess what counts. Keep the invitation specific enough that nobody feels they need to spend extra to fit in.
Match the gifts to the players
Use at least two players and exactly one wrapped gift per player. Count both before starting. A couple sharing one gift should participate as one playing unit and draw one number, not two. If each person wants a separate turn and gift, each needs to contribute one gift to the pool.
Label the wrapped gifts with unique letters or other short labels. Those labels let the host track steals even as the gifts move around. Draw unique turn numbers from one through the number of players. The first player opens a gift; later players have a choice.
Late arrivals can join before the first turn begins. Once the game starts, the player list is closed for that round. Someone who arrives afterward can watch. Don’t add a new gift or an extra numbered turn halfway through.
Open a gift or steal an eligible one
When your number is called, either open a wrapped gift or take an eligible opened gift from another player. If you take someone’s gift, that person immediately becomes the active player. They can open a wrapped gift or steal another eligible gift.
The displaced player cannot immediately take back the gift just taken from them. A gift that has already been stolen twice is locked with its holder and is never eligible again. Opening a gift does not count as a steal.
The chain continues until somebody opens a wrapped gift. Then the host calls the next unused turn number. Players whose numbered turns have already happened can still make a choice if their gift gets stolen. That is part of the current chain, not a new numbered turn.
For example, Player 3 takes Player 1’s gift. Player 1 then opens a wrapped gift. That ends Player 3’s chain, so Player 4 goes next. If Player 1 instead steals an eligible gift from Player 2, Player 2 makes the next choice. The host records each steal against the gift that moved.
Make the ending clear
If the active player has no eligible gift to steal, they open a wrapped gift. One will still be available during an unfinished numbered turn because each completed turn opens exactly one new gift.
After the final numbered turn and its chain finish, everyone keeps their current gift. Player 1 does not receive a bonus steal. A player may end up with the gift they brought; this version does not add a special rule against that outcome.
The two-steal limit applies across the entire game, not separately to each turn. Mark the gift’s first box when it is stolen once and its second box when it is stolen again. Announce that it is locked. That gives the group a visible record instead of relying on memory.

Download the free four-page holiday gift-swap host kit (PDF). Open the PDF, save a copy, then print the pages you need. No signup is required.

Print only what you need
Print the four-page kit on US Letter paper at 100% scale. The pages are write-in templates, not interactive digital forms. Keep the rule sheet and checklist for another year. Use a fresh turn and gift record for each new round.
The record has room for 12 players and 12 gifts. For a larger group, print another copy, replace its printed turn numbers with the next numbers, and continue the gift labels without repeats. Keep the sheets together so the two-steal limit stays accurate.
The invitation is a template for you to personalize and send. Fill in the date, location, start time, reply deadline, agreed limit, and gift guidelines before sharing it with guests.
Keep the preparations simple
